ALL GUITAR TEACHERS ARE NOT THE SAME! Here's what you're not being told. There is a big difference between a guitar instructor who teaches on the side in his or her spare time and one who is a professional guitar instructor. Here's the typical situation. Most guitar instructors teach out of a music store. This music store has either many guitar teachers or sometimes, just one. When you call about lessons, the store workers, not you, tells you which teacher they think is right for you, which could also mean that this teacher is the only one who has the available day and time that you requested. Also, this guitar instructor teaches close to where you live and is $10 a month cheaper than guitar instructor B who teaches on the other side of town, which....uh....does all this matter when choosing the most qualified guitar instructor? It apparently does to those who think all guitar teachers are the same. SAMPLE AUDIO LESSONSNo flash player! It looks like you don't have flash player installed. (continued)Most guitar instructors do not have a plan or curriculum ready for you. They instead proceed to "wing it" on the spot. They of course will ask you what type of music you like and they will show it to you. However, the problem is, that for the beginner, 99% of the time, this music is way out of the student's scope or ability, unless of course, the student has really good skills as a player already. But nevertheless, there is still no plan or direction that will be offered to the student. The student may think that they are making progress, when in reality they are just playing notes from a piece of paper in front of someone, and not learning the crucial things that every guitarist should know. This instructor will sometimes use method books with a one-size fits all mentality. This is just plain laziness. They will also sometimes excuse themselves from the lesson to schedule gigs at the local sports bar, which is, of course, his or her main priority. To sum it up: This type of instructor is not interested in improving their approach as an instructor, nor are they interested in the student's progress, because in their mind, you are just a "day gig" to them. In addition to that, this guitar instructor tries to cram students in his or her schedule back to back, therefore, running the student out the door the minute the session is over. And if they do not, then the next student in line gets cheated out of their session time because the student before them is still gathering their stuff together, talking to the teacher, etc. This is inevitable. Therefore, lessons with this type of teacher are almost guaranteed not to start on time.THERE IS A BETTER WAY.1) Your sessions will be 45 minutes in length, rather than the normal 30. I schedule my students at the top of every hour, so you will never be rushed out the door once your lesson is over.2) Method books will be used as an addition to improving your playing, not an instead of. 3) You are more than just a "day gig" to me. You are the only reason that I am in this business. Also, nothing is more rewarding for the student than to be able to play not only with confidence, but to become a musician, rather than just a tab reader. And also to be competent enough to play along with any guitarist at any level, is really cool as well. This is extremely rewarding to the player, and I feel that most other guitar instructors out there are cheating their students out of this wonderful part of their musical journey. Not here. As for myself, I use a totally different approach. 4) I will make sure that you are competent enough to play along with any other guitar player of any skill level within the first year! 5) You will be able to choose a program that is right for you, thus focusing on your specific musical needs and interests. 6) You will receive quality lessons from a professional guitar instructor whose only business is teaching guitar! MY OVERALL APPROACHI feel like my approach is a very different from other guitar instructors and much more effective, as I have personally witnessed firsthand. Having said that, my feeling about progress as a guitarist is inspiration. How does this occur? Through influences. Every great musician all through history had them, copied their styles, and then did their own thing. So why try and re-invent the wheel? We will copy the pros and we will get the same results! However, this must be specific. Once someone has influences, they are on their way. I base my approach around that. Learning songs is next, and through the tunes, we will discover various techniques and apply the theory of music to the artist. Weaknesses are also revealed, which is good, sort of like pulling out the weeds in a garden, or eliminating what doesn't belong. Rhythm is very important as well as having a good ear. It’s all a balance. One without the other and the whole thing crashes. Therefore, a tuner and a metronome are two things that no musician should be without. Note: A metronome is the thing that goes tick tock, tick tock. Recording yourself is another important factor in the development of one's musical abilities, since it provides a "mirror" of your overall sound and style. This will allow you to make leaps and bounds in a very short time span. Of course, playing live is the best thing that you could ever do to improve your playing. Ultimately, when the student and myself can play together in harmony, competency will be accomplished. My students have always, in my opinion, surpassed their other musical colleagues in knowledge as well as playing ability. I will continue to give the type of quality lessons that my students deserve. |
